These are unscientific but fun to watch. You might be surprised to see how well some of them do.
I am sorry to have to post this, but I must. It is in no way relevant to what we do here, but it should have you in stitches. Please watch the videos in order for full effect.
Last weekend I had the opportunity to meet up with Gilbert Perez to do a little shooting. Gilbert is a USPSA competitor who has one the fastest draws around. We were standing at 12 yards shooting 8″ plates on a rack. The drill was to draw and fire one shot on a plate as fast as possible. My best time (actually hitting the plate) was 1.39 seconds. Gilbert consistently was around .80 which included an accurate shot. Check out this video and notice the draw and then the mag changes.
A friend of mine came by the other night to pick up a really cool gun that he had ordered, and he dropped me a surprise; The Art of the Dynamic Handgun, by Magpul Industries. It’s a 4 DVD set that follows Travis Haley and Chris Costa as they teach the Handgun Course to a group of shooters.
The first thing that I want to say about these DVDs is that they are some of the best produced gun DVDs I have ever seen. Most gun DVDs look like they were shot at a range with a handycam. You just don’t get what you pay for in many cases. These were done first rate with great editing. You definitely won’t get bored watching these, and for $50, they are a solid value.
The Dynamic Handgun shows civilians, military and law enforcement how to properly deploy a handgun in many situations you are likely to see on the street. They cover basics and advanced shooting positions that you should practice but normally don’t. The one thing I came away with is that my training has been far too soft lately. It is too easy to go shoot a few mags at the range and never get dirty or tired. This obviously leads to a plateau of skills that are rusting away.
Interestingly enough for all you Fist-Fire fans, the shooting position looks familiar.
If you want to see a preview, check out their stuff on You Tube.
The Glock Pistol Stabilizer looks like a a great toy for those of you in the LE community. It offers a quick deployment of a carbine from the pistol. Add a Glock 18 to the mix, and you really have something cool.
Too many people are out their without a clue of what they are doing. You can help by giving new shooters tips on safety. If everyone would take someone under their wing it would make a big difference. In this video the guy shooting is unfamiliar with a fully automatic Glock 18. The accident that follows is crazy.
I want to show a video of Rick Simes, from the Tactical Shooting Academy, shooting targets at different distances to show you should engage your competition targets. One of things we all struggle with is trying to be faster. Rick does a good job of taking the time on the longer shots, and moving quickly through his closer shots. When you have distance, take the time to get a good sight picture, and trigger pull to break the shot.
Massad Ayoob is considered to be one of the leading trainers in the world. He trains law enforcement and civilians, but what makes him different is that he can actually back up everything he says with his shooting. In fact, he holds the master ranking in all 5 IDPA classes. Since we have been getting so many revolver questions lately, we thought it might be helpful to see go over the best reloading techniques out there. Hope this helps.
They call him The Great One, TGO for short. Here he is shooting a steel stage earlier this year. Notice how he misses one on the plate rack and keeps it going to finish it off. Many of us miss a plate and completely lose our rhythm. He brings it back in to finish the run nicely. I’m sure he was not happy with this run, but at the end of the day you have to keep going.
If you miss on the plate rack, give a hard sight focus until they start to fall again. Don’t hurry up and miss.
Taran is a great shooter. Even though he many not seem as fluid as some of the other shooters, he is consistently up at the top debunking the myth that you can’t compete at a run and gun type of match if you don’t have a certain body type.
