Res-Q-Me
| August 13, 2010 | 1:00 am | knives | 1 Comment

I had a conversation last week with a metro officer who was alerted to a baby left in a car in a mall parking lot.  The young teenage father claimed he forgot about the child while he went in to buy some shoes with a friend.  When the officer arrived at the vehicle, the child had been in the car for about 20 minutes with an inside temperature around 106 F.

The officer used a neat tool called Res-Q-Me. This tool allows you to break a window without any force.  Press the round end against the window, and a spring loaded metal piece will shatter the window.  It also comes with a seat belt cutter.

For $9.95 you can get this at Cops Plus.  Cops Plus is a great website for those of you interested in LE gear, but they also have a great selection of gear for civilians as well.  You might think about adding one of these to your key ring or leaving one in an accessible place in your vehicles in case you ever need to get out of a car quickly when doors will not open.

By the way, thanks to the officer the child made a full recovery.

Today I had a lunch with David from LifeView Outdoors.  They are a newer company that is offering some great deals on outdoor gear of all types.  They are located in Nashville and have recently started carrying some tactical knives from brands like SOG and Benchmade to name a few.

David told me that business has been good lately, which makes us all feel a little better in the current situation we face, and that one item they can’t keep in stock is the Ka-Bar Dozier in pink.

Evidently there are plenty of women out there that know a good knife when they see one.  Don’t let it surprise you that more and more women are carrying tactical folders or that they want their knives to look as good as they perform.  Ladies everywhere have jumped into the realm of self-protection like never before.

If you are looking for a good tactical folder, or your next piece of camping gear give LifeView Outdoors a call.  With prices that are competitive with all of the box stores, you won’t be disappointed.

12 Days of Christmas for Shooters: Day 4

Having been around many hunters, we know how valuable a good knife can be.  Whether you are doing chores around the camp or skinning game, having a great knife is important.  This of course is in addition to having bragging rights.

If you have never owned anything from Cold Steel, you owe it to yourself to check out their extensive line of knives and swords.  They offer some of the sharpest knives around, and their customer service is great.  If you dull the knife, send it back with a few bucks and they will sharpen again and clean it up.

The hunting knife we like the best is the Ultimate Hunter.  This folder has everything you want.  The edge is unbelievable.  It’s strength is unmatched.  You won’t find a better knife.  All of this makes it great, but what we love is that it is a folder.  For any of you guys who have added a few lbs over the years the folder is a great relief!  For anyone that doesn’t want gear hanging around you can’t beat it.

This knife retails for about $120.  Check out the video below and prepare to be impressed.

12 Days of Christmas for Shooters: Day 3

One of the coolest things around is a great multi-tool.  We use them all the time in our shop, and many of our LEO customers like to have one on their duty belt.  While you may be most familiar with the Leatherman brand, there are several other companies out there making some pretty cool tools.

Gerber has been making great knives for many years.  They offer a good value with high quality parts.  What many people don’t know about are their multi-tools.  If you haven’t seen the Diesel, you are missing out.

This multi-tool has all of the great functions that you expect and one huge added bonus; one handed opening.  On the traditional multi-tool it takes two hands to get them deployed, but the Diesel has a mechanism that allows the user to slide it out with one hand.  The other thing besides the cool factor about this tool is that you will no longer get your fingers pinched closing it back after you open one of the blades or files.

So who do you buy this for?  The LEO on your list will love having this.  Anyone who works outside will appreciate the versatility and one handed opening.  Shooters can use this in their range bags.  I actually bought one for my dad to have in his vehicle a few years ago, and he loves it.  Several time I have caught him showing it off to friends.  At just under $60, it is a great value that is sure to please.

The gun business is ever changing and hardly predictable, but I thought I would share some of the things that are hot in our shop right now.

  1. Anything AR.  If you can get your hands on it, people will stand in line to buy it.  Optics, accessories, mags, ammo, uppers and lowers are all in demand.
  2. Glock light rails for early generation Glocks.  Unfortunately they don’t fit the large framed 20 and 21 models.  We get inquires about these every day.
  3. The SM-1.  This is the most popular custom package that we offer.

Most searched items this month on our site:

  1. Glock Trigger Job
  2. Taurus 1911
  3. Winchester 190

There are several items that we expect to get hot at Christmas, but as mentioned before it is hard to predict.

  1. Lights.  Tactical lights are growing in popularity.  We love them, and more and more of our customer base is interested.
  2. Lasers.  As prices continue to drop on this technology they are in higher demand.
  3. Knives.  We are getting more and more calls about Kershaw’s Ken Onion designs.  With Christmas coming these will make great stocking stuffers.

If you are looking for Christmas gifts any of the above would be sure to please the shooter in your life.  Hope this helps.

Essentials for every gentleman

It crossed my mind that many of you will be going to church tomorrow, and probably won’t be wearing your tactical clothing, which means you may not know what is appropriate cutlery.  I remember having a conversation with an elderly woman who told me that every gentleman always carried tow things; 1. a handkerchief and 2. a pocket knife.  I have to admit that I am normally found without either in my suits, but I am going to turn over a new leaf by carrying these two items because I would never want to be thought of as a commoner.  So let’s deal with these two items.

1.  The handkerchief – If you grew up in the country, you probably carried some sort of bandanna with you as a handkerchief.  They were used for everything, but that is not what this lady had in mind.  You need to go to the local Walmart or department store and buy some white handkerchiefs.  Now carrying them is not optional, but using them as a snot rag is definitely optional.  I personally can’t do it.  I see no point blowing my nose and carrying it my pocket, but let your conscience be your guide.  So why carry one?  Never know when a lady will one, and in the south they can be good for perspiration.

2.  The pocket knife – Leave your tactical folder at home when you have on a suit unless you can remove the pocket clip.  You don’t want that nice suit shredded, and a pocket folder on anything but jeans screams no class.  Buy a nice Case knife or a Hen and Rooster folder.

The toothpick or mini trapper are great for suit carry.  You never know when you will need to open something, peel some fruit, or defend yourself from all the dangers that church and the office bring.

You may not be a classy, sartorial type of guy, but carry these two items and most people will never know.

Kershaw Chive

Kershaw Chive

Kershaw Chive

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Kershaw line of products you should get to your local retailer and spend a few minutes playing with their designs.  One of our customers loves this little knife for his everyday carry companion.

The chive is a small knife for pocket carry.  The blade is just less than 2″.  It utilizes the Ken Onion Design opening system that makes it esy to deploy one handed with the touch of a finger.  One thing we love about this knife is that pocket clip can be removed so you can carry it without tearing up your nice pants. It is a discreet knife with a great edge.  Perfect for the guy in an office who can’t carry a larger tactical folder.

Cold Steel Ti-Lite
| May 21, 2008 | 1:00 am | knives | No comments

If you have never heard of the Cold Steel company, you will find it interesting to take a look at their product line. One of our favorite knives from this company is called the Ti-Lite.

The Ti-Lite comes in a 4 inch blade that is unbelievalbly sharp from the factory. It also features a quillion that can be snagged on the pocket for one handed opening. You will also find that the this feature is useful for opening off of someone else’s clothing. If you are a cop you will really like this knife because it can be deployed for strikes. Priced around $70, it is a great value.

One additional note. . . I personally have carried this knife for over 2 years. When a Cold Steel product gets dulled, you can send it back to the factory for resharpening and polishing. It only cost about $10 and includes return shipping.

Utility Knife
| January 19, 2008 | 3:19 pm | knives | 3 Comments

The other day, my friend Bill showed me the Gerber EAB Pocket Knife (item # 5544) . It is a utility knife that uses a replaceable razor blade. I think he bought his for about $10 at one of the mart stores around Christmas. I was impressed by the slim design of the knife, and its utilitarian function. I am always looking for something like this around the shop. We receive a lot of packages every week and if you use your carry knife, you will soon find it dull from the cardboard and tape. The problem is, I can’t stand to carry a full size utility knife because they are so bulky and clunky. We have small utility knives that we keep in our shop aprons, but they don’t have the same size blade as the larger ones, making them a little more fragile. This seems like the perfect medium between the two. Check it out at gerbertools.com.
