CCW and Traffic Stops

Lately in Nashville, Metro Police seem to be working hard to keep our neighborhoods safe by running speed checkpoints. I have recently seen several cars pulled over for speeding through residential areas. It brings to mind that if you have a CCW you might be interested in the following tips that will keep you safe and let the officer that pulled you over know you have his safety in mind.

1. When you are pulled over it is a great courtesy to the officer if you make no attempt to get in your console or glove box until he arrives and asks to see your license and registration. It would be even better if you simply sat with your hands raised or on the steering wheel. This simple act of courtesy lets him know that you have his safety in mind.

2. Whether your state requires it or not, it is a good idea to disclose that you have a handgun in the car when he approaches. Once again you are building good faith with the officer.

3. Present your CCW with your license.

4. If it is night, make sure you do all of these things with the dome light on.

When you do these things you are building a relationship with the officer. Remember that they rarely see anything good during the day, so they are often guarded. When you do this, it may just work in your favor.

Oh by the way; remember to never ask for a break. If you were speeding try a different approach and own up to it and apologize. In my limited time in the L/E community our officers had a standing rule. If you ask for a break, you just received a ticket. Drive careful and be safe.

If you like IDPA, TN is hosting the Southern Regional Championships May 24, 2008. This is a great opportunity to try your hand at a major match if you have been competing in local IDPA stuff. It is located in Manchester, TN which is about 1 hour from Nashville. If you are out of state and plan on shooting, this is a great opportunity to get the family here for all the sights in Nashville. We know it will be a great match.

XS Big Dot Sights

If you are considering night sights for you pistol you may have heard of a great sight called the Big Dot from XS Sights.

These sights have been around for a while. In fact we first heard of them from the Tactical Shooting Academy. D.R. Middlebrooks has variation of this sight called Pro-Sights. While both of the sights use the letter “i” to sight the gun, Middlebrooks makes his v-notch deeper which may improve the accuracy.

What no one disputes is how fast these sights are for competition and self-defense. The sighting system is simple and effective. Its only limitation is that you will not shoot your most accurate groups with these sights, but if you are not shooting bullseye it shouldn’t be a factor.

One thing to keep in mind. XS advertises these sights as user installed. We have installed them on Glocks, 1911′s and a Springfield XD, and have found that it is not always easy without the use of a sight pusher. The Glock is by far the easiest of the three we have experience with, but it still wasn’t easy. What you don’t want to do is start beating on your tritium sights with a hammer and punch. Be very careful here. If your sights are hard to get in like they were on the XD, take them to a gunsmith. Don’t pound them until you break the sight or mess up your gun. Some things should be done by people with the proper tools.

Reassemble Your Gun Correctly

It is important to take a few moments after cleaning to make sure you gun is assembled correctly. With a handgun you should make sure that it will fire double and single action (if applicable), stay at slide lock manually and with a magazine, and release from slide lock. Otherwise you could end up on You Tube or worse, dead.
